installation problem of slack 10.2 on the system with windowsxp
Hi guys,
I tried to install a slack 10.2 to my laptop, but unfortunately it didnt work at all. I read all the articles on forums before, but no positive end!!! Now i have no slack :( and another problem no winxp. i have no idea what is going on with my system and any help of you would appreciate.
the things which I did:
I have 80 gb of HD, and i tried to partition it through Partition Magic. I had 24 gb (ntfs) for Windows, 5 gb with fat32 system, rest i made with ext2 for linux and then there was a option to make a swap to linux partition, which was made on the first part (before my System Disk (C), where my WinXp is) of my HD. After that i rebooted laptop, and there was a promt that Windows has a problem with booting....
I tried to recovery the windows with installation CD, but i coudnt get any positive results. Another thing, during recovery with winXp cd i deleted all partition, except for Disk C, where windows folder is. Now my HD has first part unpartitioned with 1 gb, then disk c (ntfs)24 gb, and the rest as well unpartitioned.
Please, advice me what was made wrong and there is a option to recovery my WinXp again???
I don't understand, there wasn't space before WinXP partition, but you created a swap partition there?
Recovering it should be easy, just boot with Windows XP, choose to install (the first option) then Repair, it should reinstall it keeping your settings.
You could get into console also and use fixboot, fixmbr and/or fixcfg.
By the way, where's the Slackware installation problem?
My PC here in the office has XP, OpenBSD and Slackware.
The right thing to do is install XP and leave the space for creating partition for Slackware. Like what you did the first time through partition magic that we have as well done here successfully.
I'm starting first with XP, booting slackware and then creating OpenBSD type A6 using Linux fdisk and then proceed with Slackware installation and finally get back with OpenBSD. Afterwards edit lilo.conf to include both XP and OpenBSD.
In your case, just install XP and proceed with Slackware and install lilo on MBR and XP NTFS partition should be tagged as bootable.
I have installed several of this sort and never had any problem.
Thanks a lot for your replies!!!
During installation Slack 10.2 didnt find my partitioned place, as i rooted as root there was a fdisk part.....then i tried to find that place, which was made by P.Magic via fdisk -l /dev/hda, fdisk /dev/sda....no way!!! Only fdisk /dev/hda sees my CD/DWD ROM!!!
And more, I cant still recover my WinXP, tried to choose install than repair, but the there is no repair option....i dont know why.
Via console tried as well to fixboot and fixmbr, no results.
IMHO its best to only shrink the Windows partition with Partition Magic and then partition the free space during the install. I have read of several cases of people having problems with linux partitions created or edited with Partition Magic and had some errors on one myself.
Distribution: Slackware & Slamd64. What else is there?

I wouldn't use any Winbloze apps at all. There are perfectly good open source Linux tools (parted/gparted/qtparted) which resize NTFS partitions (with no prior defragging required). Get a gparted boot disk or Kanotix live CD and you can do everything from there.
It would be nicer if it were usable during installation time there. Since it's a package that needs to be installed before use, it's useless in this situation, but thanks for playing!

I was responding to what randux said. parted is on the cds in /extra. All others have to be downloaded, so how does

even factor in?
EDIT*** Found the perfect solution to idiotic comments like the one I quoted in my post. Now, I'll never see them.

It factors in because the OP's question wasn't about the existence of partition editors in general, it was about partition editing that needed to take place before linux is installed. Scroll back up and read it.
It's not enough to make sure your comments are without errors. They also have to be relevant to the problem at hand. Parted has a homepage, and email addresses where the developers can be contacted. You could have just as easily mentioned these details, and they would have been just as useless to this situation as mentioning that it's in the extras/ directory.

So there's a way I can filter it out when you answer questions unrelated to the questions asked?
//Moderator.note: @evilDagmar and @cwwilson721: I do appreciate both you helping out your fellow LQ members, but by now I have seen enough thread hijacking from the both of you. Please cease this arguing over details where it does not serve to alleviate the OP's problem or to correct fellow LQ members in a respectful and factual way.
This also means I also do not want to see any discussion about this, nor comments, nor any hinting at in any of our LQ fora as well as signature's, blogs or whatever else. It would be best for you both to do some cooling down and stay out of threads the other already posted in.
If you want to discuss this then please take it up with me by email.
Please note non-compliance is something moderators will remedy decisively and RSN.
