Installation problem

Hi all,

I downloaded slackware 10.1 from linuxiso.org and it errors each time I attempt to install it. I boot from CD but immediately get the error:

"isolinux: disk error 80, AX=4280, drive 9F"

Is this a problem with the download, a corrupt CD burn or something else?

Could be either a corrupt download or corrupt burn. Did you check the md5sum of the iso you downloaded prior to burning? When burning, I have had consistently the best results when burning at 4x speed.

Yes, the md5sum matches up. I'll try burning again at a slower speed and see what happens. Although usually when I put a cd in the drive (winxp) it autoboots. When I did it with the slackware cd1 it simply opened the drive folder.

Yeah I also burn at 4x, I've got a fast burner but grew tired of burning coasters. Some CD ROM drives are not Slackware compatible. Maybe see if your Slack CD boots in another computer.
But, it is probably a corrupt download or bad burn.

I've just tried it on another PC and it does boot. So it looks like the CD drive on the PC where I want it isn't supported?

Yes, unfortunately that's probably the case, some CD ROM drives are not supported by Slackware. I can't install Slackware on my Dell Optiplex because the samsung CD ROM isn't supported. Can you swap in another drive?

The drive in question is a Samsung COMBO SM-304B. I could possibly put another drive in for the installation. Is there any way to get it working once the distribution is installed?

Good question, I'm not sure. I tried unsuccessfully to get my samsung drive to work.

I would just go with a new CD ROM drive and keep the samsung as a spare.
Maybe someone else can help you answer that question. Good luck, man!:D

Thanks for the help :)

I've tried another 2 drives now and although the CD starts, on both cd's it seems to stick on the second file it copies (initrd.img) and then the same error appears :\

I'm going to try reburning to see if it makes any difference...

I finally got it sorted :) It seems that there was a problem with the CDs I was burning to. I'd bought them earlier that day to burn slackware, and after reburning 5 times with the same results (on 3 drives and 2 PCs!) I got more CDs and they worked fine. I've had this problem in the past, batches of CDs all corrupt when I burn to them... :\
