Install Slackware on a public root server

Hi,

The french company Online.net has some excellent and really cheap public root servers on offer. (Think: ten dollars per month for a full server with full root access). Unfortunately the selection of Linux distributions on offer (Debian, CentOS, Ubuntu LTS) doesn't include Slackware.

I did some experimenting and found a way to install Slackware64 14.0 on one of those machines. (Prior experience with LFS and Gentoo was helpful.)

Here's a detailed HOWTO on the subject. It's in French, but then again, the Slackware bits are universal:

http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/L...ibox-HOWTO.txt

Abstract: how to install Slackware using an Ubuntu Live session, and without a Slackware installation media. Bit of an ugly hack, but quite fun.

Nice write up but isn't this what you have your personal LQ web log (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...inovak-596950/) for?

Yeah - the offers do look good. But I don't understand enough French to get a proper understanding of what all is entailed. Pity they don't have and English version of that site - I would be sorely tempted to sign up.

You get a guaranteed 100 Mbit/sec transfer speed on a Gigabit connection. And you get unlimited data traffic for that 10 euro per month. I think that alone makes this a very interesting offer.

Perhaps Kikinovak can tall more about his opinion of the hosting provider. If the price is so competitive I always wonder what the catch is...

No catch so far, as far as I can tell. I've had one of these servers for a bit more than a year now, hosting my friends' web sites and some mail, with Debian Squeeze so far. Quality of service is excellent. I can only recommend it.
