install kernel image

Hi......right now my desktop is doing a 'make bzImage', but in the running linux book by oreilly, the next step it says to install the new image via 'lilo'.......but I dont have the slightest clue on how to do that?

the new bzImage is located at:

/usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1/arch/i386/boot/bzImage

so do I add this to my lilo table?

image = /usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1/arch/i386/boot/bzImage
root = /dev/hda5
label = SlackwareX_2.6.8.1
read-only

hi there
while compiling ur kernel(assuming it is a 2.6 kernel)

just do all the commands first (make bzImage,make modules,make module_install)

then go for
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinux-2.6....
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6....

mkinitrd commmad(i do not know if u require this on slackware)

then do the necessary entry in ur lilo.conf/grub.conf
the book might have been describing installing the image as doing the entry in lilo.conf

regards

Smokey, you are half right.
Do as masand says, and copy the new bzImage, and the System map to /boot
Edit lilo.conf, just the way that you have it, except, the path is to /boot not to /usr/src/linux.........
Be sure to run lilo when you are done editing....

GL!

hi
and did u just edited ur above post ,coz i got confused when i saw this post again

also see that u edit grub.conf ot lilo.conf ,after u know what u r using grub or lilo
if u edit grub.conf then u need not require to re run grub as u require in lilo
