well im a newbie to slack 9, and linux in general. I partioned it swap and then just 1 large ext3 partion in which I installed to. When lilo boots up linux, it comes up to some command line linux, which is exactly the same as the linux bootdisk. I dont understand how or why, because the bootdisk is nowhere near the pc. What can I do to get it to boot up to my installation to KDE?
open /etc/initab and change the defult line from mode 3 to mode 5
id:3:initdefault
or something like that....
this is nothing at all to do with a boot disk of course, many many people prefer to boot to this runlevel. running "startx" when logged in will load KDE...
I got it working now, im in kde, but I cant connect to the internet, any ideas? Ihavea LinkSys router. I cant figure out how to setup the internet connection.
I've never set up anything higher than a 56k modem, but I presume you have to dial up your isp still to get a connection&IP. I mean either using scripts to bring the pppd deamon up and down, or a nice gui app like Kppp, and entering your isp info into that.
Just as you would for windows... at least it was for a 56k
I have a router! I tried the gay netconfig, it didnt work. I cant figure out what to do...Anyone have a clue how to setup a router?
Sorry the router works, but I cant connect to it. What do I do?
Could you be just a bit more specific about the router? Do you mean that you have it hooked up to the computer with a USB cable? Or is it hooked up to the computer through an ethernet cable and a network card connection?

How are you connecting to the router, most likely by ethernet right? And do you have Static IP setup or using DHCP from the router to obtain your IP's? What kind of NIC or ethernet are you using, brand and model? And what happens when you run netconfig, any errors, etc?
Details please or we can't help you as we lack the reading minds bit!
What kind of ethernet card do you have? If you're not sure, post the lspci output for it along with the output for lsmod, so we can see if the driver is being loaded. Can you ping the router? Have you had the card working under Linux before with another distribution? If the driver is being loaded I'd like to see the output of ifconfig.
