install grub, lilo running.. slack10.1

earlier i added a symlink to grub.conf by the name menu.lst but it didnt worked
and also i added a link like
ln -s /boot /boot/
but i didnt ttry to make a new menu.lst file

thanks for the help.. by the way why we add "make active and boot "to the end of config file..

These parameters are sent to windows loader

"make active" is to fool the windows loader I think
so it beleives it is on an active partition

boot is not mandatory, I think it could work without it
but just in case, let it be here...
