Inspiron 2600 display problems

After I install slackware, and I try to start X, the screen turns into this weird mess of flowing colors, like something you would see at a Grateful Dead concert. Anyone else get this?

It sounds to me like your horizontal and/or vertical refresh rates are set incorrectly - probably too fast. I would suggest editing the Monitor section of your XF86Config file to read as follows:

HorizSync 30-85
VertRefresh 40-150

This will give the maximum possible range of refresh rates.

Also, make sure you have the correct card installed in your XF86Config file.

Same problem, but this solution didn't work

My wife has a Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop which we recently put SuSE 10.0 on (same as I'm running). When you try to switch from one active session to another without logging out, or try to adjust any of the display properties such as the display size, the same thing happens: I get a weird flow of colours across the whole screen which gradually fades to black... then nothing ever comes back until you turn it off and turn it back on. I tried what troutwaxer suggested, because a friend who was trying to help also thought it was the refresh rates. But the problem persists. In YaST, under the X11 monitor config (as well as in the XF86Config file), it lists the monitor as "--> VESA 600X800". Shouldn't a Dell device be installed instead? And if so, which one? I know the Dell part # for the LCD in it, but cannot find a device name anywhere, and Dell's customer service is a joke. It's part # 6H291. Please Help!

The video card is an Intel i830.

You could try installing Intel i830 driver instead of using VESA. I think it can be found here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...9&submit=Go%21
