Inital install for email server

OK...if this has been asked a million times, feel free to redirect me to a previous thread. I did a search but couldn't come up with what I need.

I am setting up Slackware 10 to be used as an email server. All other installs to this point have been for personal home use. Not to be used as an actual server. I have installed all the required software from the cd but I am at a stopping point.

I am at the part of the initial Slackware Install where it asks "Enter Hostname" and then "Enter domain name".

Help me out here. Is this Hostname that it is wanting what the name of the computer is going be called? So if I wanted the email server to be called mailserver1 then the hostname is mailserver1. Then when the MX record is to be changed to point to this computer, it would be mailserver1.mydomain.com.

Next is the domain name. Is it wanting the domain of the company?

Thanks in advance

You practically answered your own question. Your hostname is the name of the computer (ie, mailserver1) and the domain is the domainname the nameserver records point to (ie, mydomain.com), which makes mailserver1.mydomain.com (yeah!).

You can easily change this and anything else in slackware after the installation.

thanks for confiming that. I thought that was the way it worked but wasn't sure.

like i said. i've installed linux many o time for home and personal use but never for a server of any kind. this is a new adventure. i would have rather tried it out at least once before doing it for a company, but....I guess we will see what happens next hahaha.

thanks for the help as I am sure there will be more questions about this

You probably don't want to configure sendmail, which is a pain, really. Better check out Exim or Postfix as a MTA and do some reading. You don't want to create another open mail relay on the Internet.

i have ran into another problem that I am going to have to sort through and try to figure out, but if I can't i will ask here.

thanks for all the help!
