incomplete characters sometimes

Hi,

Since I upgraded from 13.1 to 13.37, characters in a terminal or in some menus are time to time incomplete.

You can have a look at the image in which we can see Gimp menu, a terminal and an editor.

This is especially true for xfce and monospace fonts but happens in fluxbox too and with other fonts. What is strange is that if I close the terminal and open it again, then it could be fine or the problem would hit another letter than the 'E' like in this example.

Does anyone have the same problem ?

Thank you

I can confirm this behavior: looks like horizontal lines. Seen it on a newly installed 13.37 x64 system at work. Couldn't really care since it's to be headless. I did notice while using Firefox,.. and thought it's probably something with the fonts or videocard.

If there's a fix/reason, I would like to hear it though.

Attached a sample of the menubar from VirtualBox: notice the dash through the ' n ' of Machine

And the ' menu ' bar from LQ viewed with Firefox. Notice the capital ' L ' and the shortened ' n 's

I don't know if this is the reason but I found this in /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

[ 969.939] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 2
[ 969.943] (II) LoadModule: "fbdev"
[ 969.946] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module fbdev
[ 969.946] (II) UnloadModule: "fbdev"
[ 969.946] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)

If I try to load the module by myself I get no error though lsmod doesn't show it as loaded...

@sjampoo : Do you get the same message ?

I get this after suspend/resume on my 32-bit machine. It happened with 13.1 as well. I've just been assuming that it's an Intel video problem of some sort.

I observe the same effect in Slackware 13.1 -- usually in Firefox and less frequently in LibreOffice. In my case it has nothing in common to suspend and resume operations. I suspect video card driver causes that problem and the other ones I encountered since I bought new machine. The affected machine is ThinkPad X60s using Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller. The driver for that card is i915 Linux kernel module.

I have an intel chipset too on my netbook but it was fine with 13.1. I'll try with the vesa driver to see if it changes anything.

Similar problem here, happens only after playing flash video. Somehow flashplayer plugin window stays attached to X, and parts of it could be seen through other windows, making fonts look strange.

The only place I ever had the problem was in firefox, so I just changed the font Firefox uses and its been fine.

I tried the vesa driver through the xorg.conf-vesa file included and through a new one created by
Code:
Xorg -configure
and by switching vesa instead of intel but in both case I couldn't get anything on my screen.

It looks like it's not going to be easy to get rid of this buggy display !

I am switching to Fluxbox in which this problem doesn't pop up often. I changed the default font in Firefox.

Hi,

having exactly the same problem with my X60s (Intel 945GM) and Ubuntu, i've noticed "Couldn't create pixmap for fbcon" errors in my Xorg log.

Loading the "fbdevhw" module by adding the entry "Load "fbdevhw"" in the "Module" section of my xorg.conf got rid of that error, and so far also seems to have fixed my fonts as i haven't encountered any incomplete characters anymore.

Don't blame Slackware for such issue.
Linux Mint 10 steady produced the same mess after 10-15 minutes of running.

In the end, Mint's filesystem got totally corrupted so I have less reasons to worry about.

Try some things listed:
http://byrd740.wordpress.com/linux-on-cf-28/
http://netbeans.dzone.com/fix-garbled-text-under-linux

This is likely to be caused by the intel drivers.

Hi,

Thank you all for your help.

@wesensohn : I loaded the fbdevhw module. What happens then, is I don't get the fbdev error anymore, but still have the same font problem.

@H_TeXMeX_H : I tried the parameters in xorg.conf in the links of your message but none of them fixed the issue neither.
My card is an Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04) which is not exactly the same one that the person in this example has.

What seemed to work, was to add nomodeset to lilo.conf but then, the maximum resolution I could get was 800x600 instead of 1024x600. But still I have to test it more to make sure characters are correctly displayed to search more in this direction...
