Exclamation in slackware 10.2 USB hub device not accepting new address error=-71 ?

My usb ports work fine when used directly. When I insert a USB hub
to duplicate a port I get the message
USB device not accepting new address=2 error=-71

I used a USB hub with 10.2 for years with no issues. My best guess is that the computer thinks two different devices are trying to occupy the same address and doesn't like that.

Since you didn't specify exactly what steps you are following, I will suggest this:

Boot the computer with the USB hub connected. Run dmesg and save the output to a file for later comparison purposes.

Plug the USB device into the hub after you are fully booted and logged in.

Run dmesg as root in a terminal to see whether the device is being properly seen. Save the output of dmesg to a file so you can compare it with the original one in case the device does not work.

If that doesn't help, please provide the make/model of the hub and the exact wording of error messages.
