imapd package

Who knows something about the imapd (alpine) package in Slackware? Is it maitained to be up to date?

In the sourcecode there is a note about the last update:
Quote:

*/
/*
* Program: IMAP4rev1 server
*
* Author: Mark Crispin
* UW Technology
* University of Washington
* Seattle, WA 98195
* Internet: MRC@Washington.EDU
*
* Date: 5 November 1990
* Last Edited: 3 March 2008
*/
I see that other packages are updated lot more time than imapd, does this mean that imapd is not maintained? (or it just do not need to be updated because its good?)

Updates for Alpine have stopped upstream, so there is nothing for Slackware to do. It's package is up to date.

Is that really what you wanted to know, or are you perhaps looking for an IMAP daemon to use? If you are looking for an IMAP daemon to use I would suggest the excellent Dovecot.

Yes, I am looking for the answer whether Its safe to use the default alpine imapd or change to some other application. Actually I use the default imap daemon on Slackware for a longer time and I experienced lot of crashes. Since I tried almost everything to solve this crashes without success I started to thinking about, maybe its the alpine itself that has some bugs in its code...
It really seems I will try Dovecot ...

One stupid question - what does this mean?

Does it mean that the author do not maintain the code of the application anymore?

Correct. The last version of Alpine released by the author(s) was 2.00 in 2008.

The stopped the development upstream, but continuous project is already available called re-alpine http://sourceforge.net/projects/re-alpine/

It looks like Dovecot has much better development than Alpine (from the imap and pop3 server side of view). Alpine (re-alpine) develops support for Win,POSIX,Portable systems and it looks like that they choose too wide area of development. I read the re-alpine project site and compared it to Dovecot whit this result:

1. Alpine (re-alpine) focuses development on MUA. I think the imapd and popa3d is the part of alpine which could be used as imap and pop3 server in Slackware. So the stability and up-to-date features (of server daemons) are not the main target of development.

2. Dovecot focuses its development on IMAP and POP3 in server role. Develops the application for Linux/UNIX like systems. As I can read on the project site - the latest status message says: Complete support for IPv6 SSL and TLS. This makes me assume that its feature development is really up-to-date.

It really looks like that the Alpine as an imap and pop3 server is not the best choice today - so Mike_M thanks for the information. I going to use Dovecot.
