i'm new to slackpkg

I'm not used to using a package manager on slackware, so im not surprised if its a user error. But last night i set up slackpkg to use ftp://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slac...kware-current/ but this morning i get up see its done, reboot and now it wont run kdm, i swiched to runlevel 3 and it gives me this error when i try startx: FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
the only way to do anything was to run xwmconfig(which kde was not in) and run xfce.

I was going to update and upgrade-all back to 12.2, but didnt cause

1) i could screw it up worse and

2) i figured there is probably a way to fix it without getting rid of the updates

Which slackpkg commands did you run? Was it those 2 commands?

slackpkg update
slackpkg upgrade-all

You mention that KDE (4.2.1) does not start. It's most probably because you didn't install the new packages like libraries that are required by KDE 4.2.1

You need to install new packages, so the "normal" sequence to upgrade with slackpkg should be:

slackpkg update       # update local cache
slackpkg install-new  # install new packages
slackpkg upgrade-all  # upgrade all packages
slackpkg clean-system #remove packages no longer in Slackware

Here be careful! Do not forget to unselect additional packages that you have installed such as open-office, mplayer and SuperTux
