Use slack disc 2 to boot into your system then just reinstall lilo properly. If you can't use anything to boot into your system, short of taking out your drive and installing it into another pc which can boot, I suggest a reformat and use GRUB instead.

and just for clarity, if the hdisk with the bmp crashes, lilo wouldn't work?
and in grub, when using images, wouldn't i have the same issues mentioned in my earlier post?

What do you mean, bmp missing? If you have a bmp in /boot then you need to add this to lilo.conf:
bitmap = /boot/lilo.bmp
bmp-colors = stuff
bmp-table = stuff
bmp-timer = stuff
and you need to comment out "message = /boot/boot_message.txt"
If for some reason the bmp won't work and you want the table back up you need to remove the comment on "message - /boot/boot_message.txt" and comment out the bitmap stuff.
Is that what you need to know? Hope, at least, it could help...

Then what's the problem. You could either just make a new bitmap or redo lilo.conf so you don't need it.

i know i can fix the problem after it's occurred. the question is, will i be able to boot normally at that time? imagine that the hdisk has crashed or i've yanked it out. on dual boot, i may want to resolve the situation using the other OS installed.

Well I don't think you'll be able to boot normally in those situations. Have a rescuecd or bootdisk ready.
