Idea to help the people not good at configuring kernels

I have made a few kernels but it seems that I never can get them configured just right and I always end up worse off that i did with the stock kernel. but a thought occured to me;

why doesnt someone who knows alot about making slackware packages (and configuring kernels) just make a package that contains a kernel with a basic IDE configuration (kind of like the stock slackware kernel) and include in that package updated ALSA and anything else that needs to be updated with a kernel recompile?

also (I think this is possable) they could include the kernel configuration so that it could be applied to someones existing kernel source for programs that need that info to install right (like winmodems or wireless drivers)

cause I have been told that a badly configured kernel is worse than a stock kernel and this would be one way arround that for those without the skills to perfectly config their kernel.

Or a configuration script that detects hardware and provides a skeleton of correct choices in the config.
