Angry ide_scsi issues (oogh)

First off, let me preface this post. I have read a massive amounts of threads from this site (searched), read tldp documentation, as well as sites pulled from google.com/linux before posting here. I feel that I'm missing something.

I am attempting to emulate ide_scsi so that I can burn myself Slackware 9.0. I am currently running Slack 9.0 prerelease. Before that, I was using Slack 8.x.

I've compiled my kernel (most of it was already on anyhow), I've appended my lilo.conf, and I've uncommented /sbin/modprobe ide_scsi. Upon boot, however, my computer refuses to see my cd-writer.

I have two drives. One regular cd-rom and the other as the writer. I've appended lilo.conf using two different methods, one with append = "hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" and one with just the cd-writer (hdd).

I'm genuinely at my wits end.

From a console pormpt run "cdrecord -scanbus" and see if the sg scsi devices are listed. If it is then it should report the drives that it detects. Usually, the first drive will be device 0,0,0 and the second is 0,1,0. If the drives are viewable then it is functioning and you should be able to proceed with burning a CD image.

If you are running a custom kernel then it may be some missing items in the kernel build that could prevent the sg bus from working. You might want to go back to just a stock bare.i kernel to see if it works with it in order to isolate where there is a problem or just for the purpose of burning the CD image. I am assuming you intend to install the new image after burning it anyway.

Excalibur, thanks for the reply.

I am running stock 2.4.20 kernel with no hacks.

I had to install cdrecord but after doing so, "cdrecord -scanbus" returns

0,0,0 0) 'ASUS ' 'CRW-3212A ' '1.0 ' Removable CD-ROM

That seems like progress right there.

If you had to install cdrecord then how were you attempting to burn a CD?

I likewise was having some trouble getting Slack 9 to see my CD-RW. This article:

http://www.usafirst.net/users/welker/ide-cd_burner.htm

pretty much solved the problem for me. The directions are for Slack 8.1, but I upgraded to 9, and things worked just fine. (Comment: if it matters, my rig is as follows: the CD-RW shares the ribbon cable with my second HD. The CD-RW is jumpered as the master, the HD is the slave. Obviously my primary HD is on the main ribbon, jumpered as the master too.) I hope this helps, and good luck with it. -- J.W.

Thank you.

It's working. The guide that was posted filled in a two or three things that I was missing.

Thanks for all the help to Excalibur and J.W.

Great. By the way, the correct link to the article is:

http://www.usafirst.net/users/welker/ide-cd_burner.html

Sorry about that, somehow the ".html" extension got messed up. - J.W.
