I think I WILL NEVER BUY an ATI card again for linux!!
I think that ATI has a very BAD support for linux drivers.
some facts: ATI drivers doesn't work well with XORG (6.8.x it is almost impossible to have full 3d acceleration). ATI does not even support XORG, only the OLD Xfree 4.1,4.2,4.3... In WINEX / CEDEGA, all new titles have (wether small or big) issues with ATI drivers! I have been having issues with all of my ATI cards in linux (8500, 9200se, 9600) in the past. E.G. when I was using 8x AGP version of 9200se, the screen was corrupted when i was using resolutions bigger than/equal to 800x600 when using DVI....................etc ....many, many other bugs that i won't mension here. I am angry......... This is only my experience and if ATI won't release a new & stable & compatible driver in maybe 1-2 month i will change my opinion about ATI and i will buy an NVIDIA card! If you have any good & bad experiences, please let us know... |
i wouldnt buy one for any operating system period !
i had nothing but a pain in my %$@#! with mine support stinks i dumped my 3dlabs card( w/ati chips), and got back on the nVIDIA(quadrofx) wagon again. what was i thinking? |
Many of members think that way abiut ATI.
I guess NVIDIA is our logical choise |
Yipe! I went with nVidia only with I built my two systems... Why even bother with ATI since it sucks big time anyway! :o

I was kinda of lucky when I built my first linux system. I just happened to buy an nvidia graphics card by sheer luck and then discovered that most people with ati cards were finding it difficult to get them working properly under linux. Whats sad is that ATI have known about this problem for years and they still don't do anything about it.

Unforunately, this is the norm when it comes to alot of companies and driver support for any other OS other than windows. Hopefully next year will see more driver support for all linux. :D

I will wait 1, maximum 2 months and if nothing improves signifficantly, I am switching to NVIDIA. Maybe I was too much influenced by the ATI's propaganda that ATI is much, much better & faster....etc
As I see I think that Nvidia is doing much better to support linux drivers, so it is, at least for now if nothing changes , for me reasonable to switch to nvidia. Nvidia released 64-bit drivers for linux, while there are only just some rumours that ATI will release 64-bit drivers for linux (SOON :).. BTW: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to ALL of you! |
