It sounds as though the lan is working to me
jarib mentioned dhcpcd. There are a few different dhcp programs. Since he is using Slackware, that sounds like the program to use. You can also renew a dhcp lease with "dhcpcd -n".

would this be why my internet is not working, yet my lan is??

If I catch you right, then that would be a problem. The first column in "route" command is the destination. The second column is the route that your box will try to use to get packets there. Your default gateway should show up in the second column next to either "default" or "0.0.0.0". Try:
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
Also, try to ping the following addresses:
google.com has address 216.239.39.99
google.com has address 216.239.57.99
google.com has address 216.239.37.99
If you can ping these, but still can't "ping google.com", then it is a dns issue. Otherwise, if your network is working perfectly, but you still cannot get out, then it is a routing issue.
P.S. The route command as I used it here is only temporary. It will remember it until reboot only.
