A couple of comands you could try are
ifconfig
dhcpcd -d
for more options on those comands try
man ifconfig
man dhcpcd
you could also run netconfig
ping also works, try pinging something with a name such as yahoo.com or the ip address 66.94.234.13 to see if you're getting out at all

You need a name sever enty in /etc/resolv.conf and have the proper default gateway set, (both should be the addy of your router.)

Do you have a DHCP lease or a static IP configuration in your 2k box? That'll affect how you need to configure your system. If it's static IP, then you'll need to configure your connection using the route and ifconfig commands. If it's a wireless connection, the iwconfig will be useful, too. I'd post more detailed info, but it's in the man pages, and I'm on a winbox at the moment. You'll also have to edit /etc/resolv.conf to add the DNS configuration. (again, that's in the man pages)

If you're set up for DHCP, then all you need is:

ifconfig ---> will give you a list of your ethernet connections. Probably eth0
dhcpcd (interface) ---> again, probably eth0. so dhcpcd eth0 should get your connection up.

And just because there's an IP doesn't mean that your internal net is working. can you ping the gateway/router?

It sounds as though the lan is working to me

jarib mentioned dhcpcd. There are a few different dhcp programs. Since he is using Slackware, that sounds like the program to use. You can also renew a dhcp lease with "dhcpcd -n".

If I catch you right, then that would be a problem. The first column in "route" command is the destination. The second column is the route that your box will try to use to get packets there. Your default gateway should show up in the second column next to either "default" or "0.0.0.0". Try:
route add default gw 192.168.0.1

Also, try to ping the following addresses:

google.com has address 216.239.39.99
google.com has address 216.239.57.99
google.com has address 216.239.37.99

If you can ping these, but still can't "ping google.com", then it is a dns issue. Otherwise, if your network is working perfectly, but you still cannot get out, then it is a routing issue.

P.S. The route command as I used it here is only temporary. It will remember it until reboot only.
