So far i only have one partition which is my Windows XP NTFS partition which is set to Primary. The rest of the HDD is free. Will i be able to create an extended partition for Linux, or do i have to have 3 or more primary partitions?

Allocate the extended whenever you want - there is no requirement for primaries, save what XP demands for its system partition. You appear to have met that already.
