I love Slackware :)

I am learning a lot more from Linux using Slackware, I switched to it from Ubuntu and after getting used to it I got everything I normally use running just fine, it's stable, fast and well pretty fun too figuring everything out :D Hell I just had a problem booting up so I had to use a LiveCD I had to fix it, I loaded up my Fedora Live CD to test it out and wtf? It didn't have VIM lol

that is just wrong...

Did it have mono though?
Fedora seems to be the only "newbie friendly" distribution somewhat opposing this mono frenziness.

If you have not read these already, I strongly recommend you read the Slackbook, the Slackware Changes And Hints.txt, and the Slackware How To:
http://slackbook.org/html/index.html
http://slackware.oregonstate.edu/sla..._AND_HINTS.TXT
http://slackware.oregonstate.edu/sla...lackware-HOWTO
I also came to Slackware from Ubuntu (with a detour through Debian and Zenwalk). If you read the documentation that is available for Slackware, it really is simple (as in KISS) to learn to use.

I'd be glad if vim weren't included in a distro. I don't like it at all.

kc3 06-24-2009 08:19 AM

I'll be sure to check those out :) And not sure if it had Mono, I just used gedit. Idk, I like Vim lol

That's why we have alternate editors available. :)

I like 'vi'! Since that's what I've used for years. Why change? Clean and simple!

hitest 06-24-2009 08:40 AM

I'm lazy; I use nano in Slackware and FreeBSD. It does the job for me. :)

brianL 06-24-2009 08:54 AM

Yeah, nano and kwrite. But Emacs rather than Vi, without a doubt.

Biggen 06-24-2009 09:15 AM

Nano all the way baby! I started using it around '99 and haven't looked back. I had to edit out the crontab one day so I fired off "crontab -e root" and I couldn't believe it defaults to VI. I almost threw up!

Glad you are enjoying Slack!

Definitely :D That's one reason I love Linux, there's something for everyone

brianL 06-24-2009 09:31 AM

I might get round to learning how to use Vi someday (if I live that long), until then I've got this in /etc/profile:
export EDITOR=nano

Amen! :D

armanox 06-24-2009 09:53 AM

I am a fan of Vim myself. If only emacs came with a good text editor....

To answer one of the above questions, Fedora does not ship with Mono. Red Hat is paranoid about it, and feels that it is better to avoid any potential future licence issues.

Ilgar 06-24-2009 10:04 AM

What's wrong with pico :) ? But I also feel that at some point I must learn emacs or vi (I'll probably try vi).
