I had a similar problem after installed the ALSA drivers. The alsamixer program is key in finding all the appropriate mixing channels on the card using the ALSA drivers. And setting them to non-mute levels...

The various X mixers didn't see the 'Wave Playback' mixing channel on my Yamaha chip which of course is set to mute by default. No errors and no sound till I found that setting...

I tossed a line in my rc.local that uses an alsa util (forgot the work) to set that channel on boot to 80% - highly recommended if this happends to you again
