None of my distros will hook up with the printer using the .deb pkgs...hers the downloads ive found for linux, any help appreciated maybe I can try different ones? https://www.canondrivers.org/canon-p...iver-download/
Do I need cups running and what else?
Also shouldnt my swap partition be 3gb to be usable?
Thanks
I would guess you do need CUPs as that is a printing service. I thought I read somewhere (cannot find the link right now), where theoretically you can take a CUPs driver from Mac OSX, and extract the PPD file from it, and use that but there is no guarantee. This is the very reason why when it was time for me to get a new printer, I opted not only for an HP(because they are known for their Linux compatibility) but also one with network capability (ethernet). I put it on my network via ethernet(no wifi, just ethernet - that's just how I want it), HPLIP and CUPs already installed with Slackware, added printer via HPLIP - printer works, done. No fuss, no muss; but that is of course if you bought a new printer. I don't even know how old your printer is but I would have thought if it is old enough it would be supported by now, but I guess not?
I dunno, try downloading one of the OSX Cups files, and see if you can get the PPD from it and install it, hopefully someone else might have a better idea because other than that you are probably screwed.
With 3GB RAM it might not hurt to have a larger swap, but the amount you have may turn out to be fine under your normal usage. The old rule of thumb that swap should be two times RAM dates to when RAM was measured in KBs or MBs, not in GBs. I have 16GB RAM and 4GB swap and the swap is almost never used.
I have no experience with Canon, but Slackware includes a neat utility called rmp2tgz which will convert an RPM to Slackware format. You might try grabbing the *.rpm from Canon and running that utility on it as root, then installing the resulting package using pkgtool.

Yes you do need to have cups start at boot-up. If cups is running you will see this message on boot-up.
cups: started scheduler. [OK]
If you did not activate cups during the installation of Slackware you can activate it with a root terminal.
# cd /etc/rc.d
# chmod +x rc.cups
# /etc/rc.d/rc.cups start
When you see that cups is running you can launch a web browser and enter the following address in the URL window: localhost:631
That will launch the cups interface and you can select your printer.

Hey hitest long time...
I did all that still nothing.
Is best advice to go with what Jeebiz says??
This printer cost $18 lol maybe go with a HP printer as Jeebiz says and no issues?
Jeebiz how much did your printer cost?
fyi I wanna get rid of vista and go into full time story writing using google docs and slackware and a printer for hard copies and only slackware plus playing with other distros I love remastering lol. I'm soon to be published in some ezines but want hard copies of my stories you know on paper.

$600 , only because it was a birthday present to myself and I did a buttload of overtime to begin with. Maybe you can find it now for less actually. It is a color laser printer - HP LaserJet Model M553. I do not suggest something like that, but in my case I got real tired of all-in-ones and inkjets. IMO you are probably better off getting a laser printer even if you do not print as much, only because with ink jets, if you print and do not use them for a significant time - it dries the heads and you end up buying a new printer anyways since as soon as the printhead is messed up, that's it for the printer. As I stated though I just got really fed up with multifunction in general, even if my last printer was still an HP, no issue with compatibility, but maybe it is just me but I always had bad luck with inkjets, even my last HP inkjet would not properly align the print head when I did routine maintenance after a while. It as an Officejet btw. So I said, fsck it, I am buying a REAL printer, so I did.
Also my laser printer does both side printing, though to be honest I haven't got around to figuring out how that works . I have had this printer for at least 2 years, and have not had any issues. Sure, it takes a bit of time to 'warm up', but once it starts printing, it prints like a champ. I am sure there are decent printers out there and by no means spend $600 (because I am just a mad lad that way), but maybe if you do not really care about color and you print mainly text, maybe get a black and white laser printer, but I would recommend skipping the multifunction garbage altogether, as probably no matter what brand even HP, to me it just seems like a poorer quality of a device, verses just a plain and simple printer.

Hi linus72!
Hey if cups is running yeah try Jeebiz's excellent ideas. I've had good luck with HP printers. I have an old HP P2015 B/W laserjet that is still working. I can't seem to kill it.
Distribution: Slackware64-current with "True Multilib" and KDE4Town.

Well...... with many Hewlett-Packard ink jets, the heads are in the ink cartridge. Every time you buy new cartridges you get new heads. If the heads dry out, don't throw away the printer, buy new ink cartridges.
The heads did dry out on me once, so now I make a point of printing a test sheet every week or ten days if the printer hasn't been used during that time. Wasting a little ink printing a test sheet is cheaper than new cartridges.

Download the source tarball (url in the .info file) into the directory with the SlackBuild files and then run (as root)
Code:
sh pixma.SlackBuild
Before installing the resulting package, I'd recommend that you remove any previous installation attempts e.g. from rpm2tgz etc. Install the resulting package with (again as root)
Code:
installpkg /tmp/pixma-4.00-x86_64-1_SBo.txz
You may have to restart cups for the pixma files to be noticed. If yours is a USB model printer, you'll have to restart your computer for udev to do the right thing. Then add your printer with the cups browser utility at http://localhost:631
Let me know if it works - I don't have a PIXMA printer but the built package's contents look the same as the rpm from Canon.
