I cannot get VLC Player 0.8.5 to play dvd's correctly on slack 10 please help!

Hey everyone whats up?

I am trying to get DVD playback on VLC player 0.8.5 on Slack 10 and whenever I try to play the dvd by going to Open Disc i get this error in the pop up message window:

Unable to open 'dvd:///dev/dvd'

Any idea how I can fix that and How i can keep it from occuring again?

Do you have /dev/dvd set up for your DVD drive? Most likely, if using udev, /dev/dvd is a symbolic link for either /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd, depending upon your configuration. One item that I have tried in the past with VLC is when choosing File > Open Disc in the Customize field I have put in the actual location of the drive itself. For instance, but default it is set for me to be dvd:// within the Customize field. If I enter my actual device for my DVD drive, which id /dev/hdc, I am able to play DVD movies w/o any problems.

well from what i can tell /dev/dvd is a symbolic link to /dev/hda (strange cuz i thought /dev/hda was my main harddrive) Do I have to mount the DVD player before i play a dvd?

Typically, if you're using either KDE or GNOME, the DVD will automount when inserted. That is strange that your /dev/dvd link is pointing to /dev/hda. Have you created any udev rules that may be creating symbolic links to any of your other devices? Try removing the link to /dev/hda by removing the /dev/dvd link itself, and then create a link to /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd (whichever is the block device for your dvd drive) and see what happens. With this, I'm assuming that your DVD drive is an IDE device.
