the problem is udev.
you either can create the node and symlink manually
linky well it sorta worked for me exept I couldnt start any terminal app, it gave an error "cant open pseudo tty or smth like that"
or you can edit your udev rules

palm is the only usb device i have so ive just changed line in my /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules from

to

KERNEL="ttyUSB[0-9]*", NAME="tts/USB%n", MODE="0666", SYMLINK="pilot"
it works for now. you just need to press the hotsync button on your palm first, wait for a few seconds and then activate the sync software.
