I can't install Java. Says I need some dependancies ....Can't find them online...??

I've been looking for certain dependancies so I can install sun's Java so I can browse the web on certain sites. But alas the install keeps saying failed due to certain Dependancies. I then would go and try to track some of the stuff down but can't find them. I'm at wits end and I want is a nice simple install of java. Not 2 days of dead ends and frustration. Not sure and i'm very very new to slackware and can't figure out anything in regards to slapt-get or just plain installing manual...*sigh*

Slackware has the Java Runtime Environment (jre) included in the install - which java do you need and what are the missing deps?

As I said in my post i'm trying to install the sun one. And I followed the steps on their site to install and it works up till I actually try to run the install then I get a dependancies error and it lists a bunch of stuff. *sigh* I'm not sure how to get around it so it's really frustrating me.

As XavierP told you, Slackware comes with a package for the Sun Java Runtime Environment, you can install it from the CD or download it from any mirror.

I guess I am truely clueless since I can't find it on the download sites. As for off the cd...My cd-rom refuses to mount or detect no matter how much I try. but that's a seperate issue all to itself. My problem is firefox doesn't detect Java for me if it's already there. So maybe it's firefox and not ....ah I don't know...im such a noob at this. so how would I get it working under firefox since I installed EVERYTHING off the cd and I mean EVERYTHING. bah sorry im just so clueless

Look for the packages named "jre*" in ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar....2/slackware/l.

You can save downloaded files to any directory. Open a terminal and cd to the directory where the file is. Then as root, run "installpkg filename".

HTH.

It's probably not a good idea to try and install RPMs on Slack. I dunno why Pat still includes rpm :/.

What Java thing popped up? You should've seen the package description and when it finished installing, you should've been returned to a prompt.

Anyway, try running "java -version" and see what happens. Edit: also check your browser to see if the plugin's working.

it worked thanks. The java thing that popped up was the package description and yes I was returned to the prompt. Now that i've actually done it with your help I will try to use the installpkg more. I learn better trying then reading if that makes sense. Well hopefully it works under firefox since thats my browser of choice.
