I can't get the system to go into suspend to ram or disk from the helper applets

as root I can get the system to go into suspend to disk or ram by running "pm-hibernate " or "pm-suspend "

I can't get the system to go into suspend to ram or disk from the helper applets in kde or xfce
this is slackware64-current
I do have an error message from xfce

** (xfce4-session:3424): WARNING **: xfsm-shutdown-helper.c:157: Failed to contact HAL: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.19" (uid=0 pid=3424 comm="/usr/bin/xfce4-session ") interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement" member="ThisMethodMustNotExistInHal" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1763 comm="/usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes "))
** Message: xfsm-shutdown-helper.c:274: HAL not available or does not permit to shutdown/reboot the computer, trying sudo fallback instead.

For the lid, I just put a couple lines in /etc/acpi/acpi-handler.sh (I think thats the file, not at my linux box right now) like:
Code:
lid) pm-suspend
         ;;
under the second (I think) entry. That suspends my laptop when I close the lid.

You may need to add the power group to your user.

gpasswd -a <user> power

nope that command didn't even work for root

I still get this message when I try to suspend to ram

"Suspend and Hibernate are only supported through HAL, which is unavailable"
