I broke X messing with xorg.conf after installing nVidia drivers. Inittab is set to boot straight to X. The computer boots but gets to "starting x server" and just hangs. I tried hitting tab at Lilo prompt and boot into init3 but I am obviously not getting that command right.
Can someone help with the command? I tried Slackware init3 and just init 3. I did google but am not finding a lot that makes sense (maybe using wrong phrasing for search). Thanks for any help. Once I get in I can fix the issue back to the way it was (thanks to xorg.conf.old)
Are you using the *.run file from NVidia, or the SlackBuilds?
I used the *.run, and let the NVidia installer rewrite my xorg.conf (creates a backup, too) and everything works OK.
(That was on my desktop machine, I'm on my laptop now, so I can't give any more details.)

I used the slackbuild. I just ran the nvidia-switch --nvidia command as per the directions and everything works correctly. I had erroneously assumed (yikes, bad thing) that it would default to using it after an initial install.
And to think, the thing that prompted all of this was wanting to set up the snow effect in desktop settings (works now).
So, I am a happy camper. I knew I had to get all this resolved before I got wine going and trying to do some windows games...
I have Slackware on my laptop too but that has an ATI card and all worked out of the box beautifully on that one. I just love it.
Again, thanks for your help. I learned and got my Slackware back.
