I'd like to suggest adding Remmina to the next official Slackware release

http://remmina.sourceforge.net/

The Remmina folk just released version 1.0 of this most excellent remote desktop client. It is by far the best VNC client for Linux I've tried, and one that finally manages to do scaling properly. YAY!

TightVNC in extra/ seems more or less dead in the water for Linux, and the KDE client is at best an unstable and half-hearted attempt that can't even do SSH tunneling.

So I propose replacing TightVNC with Remmina + plugins. It's a much more powerful package. Slackware deserves a proper remote desktop client.

I assume you do know that it's already in SlackBuilds, albeit at a older version.

But thanks for the recommendation anyway - always useful to hear of other peoples successes with programs.

Yup, I know it's available from slackbuilds.org, but I believe it belongs in Slackware proper, simply because the current collection of official Slackware VNC tools are pretty crappy.

If Remmina makes it into Slackware, I vote for adding freerdp as well
I use this combination to remotely access Windows boxes from my Slackware desktop almost daily.

Remmina is a Gnome application?

I haven't tried the latest version yet, but the one on SlackBuilds.org works fine without Gnome (but has some dependencies).

Does that combination or individually, Remmina and freerdp, work better connecting to a windows 7 machine than rdesktop? I've always use rdesktop, but I can quicker response times (e.g. mouse) by using remote desktop in windows xp running in virtualbox.

Yes it does. It has many of the newer features of Microsofts remote desktop protocol.
I use it to connect to a Windows 7 machine over the internet, through a vpn connection, and locally over the LAN.
And it has a very active development community working on it.

Do you use the new versions found their respective web sites or the older ones that are at SlackBuilds.org?

Thank for the info!

I use the newer versions now.
For both (remmina & freerdp) new scripts have been submitted and are waiting for approval in the "pending" queue at SlackBuilds.org
With a little patience they should be available soon...

Just a small update: both scripts have been approved and are available on SlackBuilds.org now.

Note that the "remmina-plugins" are now included in the main remmina package.

It's kind of funny... I just recently really started using vnc for different stuff on my network (mainly b/c it gives me a desktop on my tablet). I'm actually building remmina right now.

Remmina 1.0.0 requires gnome-keyring. I guess its not optional dependency. Maybe I'll stick with older version (0.8.3) for awhile.

The latest version from slackbuilds.org won't/can't save passwords for VNC connections, at least not on my box.

Anybody else seeing this?
