i've lost my prompt login quotes/jokes...
this will sound really silly but i've lost those really cool quotes u get when u log in to a prompt or start a shell and i would like them back!! :)
i had a bit of an episode recently coz a ram block was playing up, and while i was diagnosing the problem fsck really played around with the filesystem. since then they have disappeared and i don't really know how they work. Thanks! :D |
you might need to reinstall bsd_games from the y directory on your install disk...
you can also download it from the slackware site the quotes are called "fortunes" and are generated from the games...once you reinstall it, it should create the script in /etc/profile.d and you should be good to go :) |
I always wondered where they were..just hadn't gotten around to looking yet!
|
you can edit them, add your own and stuff, too, by editing the files in /usr/share/games/fortunes. i've never done it, so i can't say how, but i think if you check out the files you could prolly figure it out.
|
excellent thanks guys :)
it was actually nothing to do with the disk problems, i was just cleaning up my disk and removed any packages that seemed to be superfluous. Now I'll have to add my own! :D |
There are some fortunes quotes available at freshmeat:
http://freshmeat.net/browse/895/?topic_id=895 |
man fortune will give you all the info you need...have fun :)

And a wonderful time was had by all, except for my poor baby who just realized it's bedtime!
|
hi sorry i went quiet! - was probably too busy enjoying my fully working linux system :D i really can't believe linux survived the beating about that the filesystem got, and fluxbox seems very content with half as much ram.
long live the open source community! PS I take it everyone is happy about the EPs vote on software patents? kicks ass :) |

PS I take it everyone is happy about the EPs vote on software patents? ----------- this is not a political forum etc. etc. etc. you're right man....jippy :) egag |
Indeed.
|
now that i know where all the quotes are i am desperately resisting the temptation to sit there and read them all! lol its much more fun to get new ones every time :)
i think windows will gradually see more and more competition from linux and open source as it is obviously progressing at a MUCH faster speed, and im sure m$ know that. OpenOffice 2 looks fantastic for starters. the next few years will be very interesting. |
