Is this a fresh install or an upgrade?

If it's an upgrade:

Have you upgraded from a previous version of Slackware or is this a brand new install?

Package updates do not require X at all. Ever.

Installed what with txz(s)?
It's a bit difficult to understand what you've done, and what the problem is. So I'll suggest running xorgsetup
.

This is probbaly not the solution in this case. He's definitely talking about Slackware 13.0 and therefore I/O device infgormation should be being passed to X by hald, there should be no need for an xorg.conf.

Without knowing more (if there's any chance he can elucidate somewhat), it's difficult to tell if the problem is an xorg.conf that shouldn't be there, or a broken or disabled hal, or some other issue.

Late note

maybe not relevant at all, but I had a problem where usb mouse was not working after installing slackware64 13 - it worked once I had disabled the ps2 in the bios (the only other thing I did inbetween was to install/initialise the mysql database)
