Question I'm having trouble with two things...

#1 In the slackware setup, I accidentally configured it to run mysqld (or something similar) on startup. Is it possible to remove this?
#2 Linux doesn't seem to be detecting my CD-RW/DVD-R writer, although I installed slackware using it, and it worked perfectly at the time.

just su to root and type pkgtool in your terminal. Go to setup and then services, u will see all the services being listed and there is an astericks at mysql, so just <space bar> then ok it. your mysql services will not run on your next boot.

1) As root: you can run pkgtool, goto Setup -> services and unselect mysql, or simply make the startup file not executable by doing:
 chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld
2) Type:
 dmesg | grep hd
And see if you can find it there, then modify /etc/fstab to suit your needs, if you see it's hdb then simply modify your /etc/fstab to something like:
/dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,users,ro 0 0
