hunspell - not finding en-US dictionaries on current?

When I try to use hunspell on Slackware Current it fails with the warning that it doesn't find a dictionary:

Code:
[hge@quasar:.emacs.d] $ echo htink | hunspell -a -d en_US
@(#) International Ispell Version 3.2.06 (but really Hunspell 1.3.3)
Can't open affix or dictionary files for dictionary named "en_US".
This might be intended behavior, but I find it surprising that hunspell doesn't work out of the box for en_US, which is the default. Is this a bug or a feature?

btw) I do have Alienbob's libreoffice installed, but hunspell as installed wouldn't pick up dictionaries from this as the search-path doesn't include libreoffice which is installed under /usr/lib64/libreoffice on my system. Below the search-path for hunspell:

Code:
[hge@quasar:.emacs.d] $ hunspell -D
SEARCH PATH:
.::/usr/share/hunspell:/usr/share/myspell:/usr/share/myspell/dicts:/Library/Spelling:/home/hge/.openoffice.org/3/user/wordbook:.openoffice.org2/user/wordbook:.openoffice.org2.0/user/wordbook:Library/Spelling:/opt/openoffice.org/basis3.0/share/dict/ooo:/usr/lib/openoffice.org/basis3.0/share/dict/ooo:/opt/openoffice.org2.4/share/dict/ooo:/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.4/share/dict/ooo:/opt/openoffice.org2.3/share/dict/ooo:/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.3/share/dict/ooo:/opt/openoffice.org2.2/share/dict/ooo:/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.2/share/dict/ooo:/opt/openoffice.org2.1/share/dict/ooo:/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.1/share/dict/ooo:/opt/openoffice.org2.0/share/dict/ooo:/usr/lib/openoffice.org2.0/share/dict/ooo
AVAILABLE DICTIONARIES (path is not mandatory for -d option):
Can't open affix or dictionary files for dictionary named "en_GB".

I would say it's neither bug nor feature, but intended nonetheless.

My take on it is: Slackware makes available a full complement of dictionaries for aspell and that is its 'default' spellchecker. While hunspell ships with no dictionaries and the package is included only as a dependency for other packages, e.g., the Mozilla Suite.

Having said that, you can use hunspell on a clean install by setting the DICTIONARY ENV to use a Mozilla dictionary:

Code:
DICTIONARY="/usr/lib64/firefox-38.8.0/dictionaries/en-US" hunspell
Hunspell 1.3.2
cowabunga
& cowabunga 1 0: bungalow
Note: do not use the 'dic' extension on the dictionary name.
