Humble Beginner with Slackware

Many people said Slackware is good and I believe so.
As a beginner, can you tell me what documents to read first?
So that I can know how to configure my slackware, how to install many softwares/games I like.

Honestly I need guidance from Experts like you.
Hope you can guide me. :)

Well, I know a lot of people are going to suggest a few online resources such as the Slackware "book" and other Wikis, but personally I think you have already arrived at the best possible resource for Slackware information. As the officially recognized Slackware support forums, LQ is arguably the largest collection of Slackware information and advice on the Internet.

Simply doing a search for any problem you may experience will almost certainly pull up a discussion and fix, and if not, you can make a new topic and have an answer quickly.

First of all , i want to get my atheros wireless working.
Other distro like ubuntu, mandriva etc get it done automatically, but not for Slackware.

I just bought an extra 500GB Sata HDD, will install Slackware onto it.
Basically i will unplug all other HDDs and run slackware on a single hard disk alone,
my Desktop is custom-made, the casing is always open, so that i can swap hdd for different OS i want to run. :D

Can you tell me how to find "fun" in Slackware?
How Slackware can make me feel "difference" from other distro?

If you want to get wireless working the easiest way to do it would be to install wicd in /extra.

Yes, you can find fun by creating your OWN tagfile for a minimalistic install and then when you need anything further, you can find fun by learning how to install packages by compiling them. Want more fun? Why not create your own distribution? http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/

Of course the definition of fun may be different for you and me!

First thing... Focus on one thing at time, you are really getting ahead of yourself. Slackware is worth it, but it is going to take TIME. Now check and see if your wireless card is recognized by the system. Post the output of lsmod and ipconfig. If you see your adapters module or if it is recognized by ipconfig, then do what the post above stated. Download and install wicd. Once you get your network going then move onto the next most pressing issue.

My PC is using AMD 64bit Athlon X2 Processor,
it has 2GB DDRII RAM,
now I have both 32 and 64 bit Slackware *.iso files,
you think I shall install 32 or 64 bit Slackware?

Daedra 01-19-2011 02:41 AM

If you only have 2gb of ram I would suggest 32bit. Your not going to see any benefit going 64bit with that system, IMO.

TigerLinux 01-19-2011 03:17 AM

in the market, for linux OS, any 64bit softwares specifically require 64bit OS?

Any 64 bit software requires a 64 bit OS.
In your many threads you always ask the same question: Should I use 32 or 64 bit? And you have got many answers to this question, so you should know by now what to use, what the benefits of each and differences between them are.
