HPLIP: Weird printing issue (cannot print) after upgrading to latest Plasma5/elogind
Using -current with AlienBob's Plasma5/elogind.
I use an HP LaserJet 1020 for printing via HPLIP. Upon upgrading to the latest Plasma5/elogind I got a weird issue: When I send a document to print from an application, nothing happens. Sometimes I get a notification saying "device communication error". Upon further investigation, it turns out that in HP Device Manager, in the page relevant page for the printer, I need to click on "Download Firmware". A dialog appears, where I need to click the "Update Firmware" button. Once I click on it, the printer becomes responsive and I can start using the printer without problems. There's no firmware downloaded. I just need to click on the "Update Firmware" button for my printer to become responsive. I don't know how to diagnose the error. So far I tried calling hp-toolbox from the terminal to see if there's something in stdin/stderr but there's nothing. ADDED: Forgot to mention that this particular printer used to print OK under HPLIP but it always required a binary blob^W^W^W firmware to run. Any hints? Thanks in advance. |
You can download and install manually...

Thanks @ferrari but the issue is not necessarily the plugin download. The problem is that I tell HP Device Manager to download the firmware and only then my printer becomes responsive, without any actual download happening. A change happens, but I am unable to tell which exact change it is.

Maybe it somehow related to that fact that hplip is compiled with --enable-policykit flag
