To my knowledge, Slack installs the Tetex package. You should download the current Tetex package from The Slackware Package Browser and issue
# upgradepkg tetex-3.0-i486-1.tgz
in the directory where the downloaded package is placed.
I am not, however, aware what Kile installs in addition to the Tetex package, so I can't tell you what to update there. Do you actually need to upgrade?

While this may not be of much help to you on slackware, this actually is an issue I'm in the process of addressing on RPM based distributions.
See http://www.tetexrpm.org/
Right now, it doesn't have a hell of a lot - I'm hoping it will grow - and attract other contributors.
teTeX is great - the shortcoming is in the packaging, it isn't really set up to allow for easy updating of the components inside via a package manager. That's not the fault of teTeX, just the way distributions tend to ship it.

I'm using teTeX on Slack with Kile. I'm using the official packages (they were updated about a year ago, it was a major upgrade for tetex). Is there important new features introduced recently? My current installation is quite sufficient for my needs.

tetex shipped with 10.1 is old but 10.2 is new.
kile is very good(like winedit), u have to get the new kile source and compile. (i dont think that kile is with kde default) or u can get the packages from linuxpackages http://www.linuxpackages.net/ this is ment for slackware
here is the link for slack binary http://kile.sourceforge.net/download.php
edit: u can either use source or the binary for slack. even u can try 1.9 beta. if it is bz2 file
$tar -xvjf xxx.bz2 will do the job and u may be left with a xxx.tgz slack pkg. then do installpkg xxx.tgz u r done
i use vim for editing tex ( http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/)
but u have to be good in vi.

I meant to ask the question for teTeX, not kile (Btw, Kile 1.9 beta is out).

Yes, then the teTeX from Slack 10.2 is the latest one.
