Question howto re-execute dhcp without re-booting?

every time my isp goes down, and later get up again, I must restart the (cable)modem, but also the pc, coz it looks like
slack (or the dhcp service or whatever) needs to re-read the data the modem is supplying.
so, is there any way to re-execute the "read" process that slack execute during boot-time, just to avoid re-booting the whole box?
thanks in advance.

Suppose your network interface is called "eth0", then the command to re-initialize the interface (including re-querying your cable modem for an IP address) is
Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 eth0_restart
By the way, my cable modem has a browser based configuration interface, where I can instruct the modem to "renew" its IP address that it gets from my ISP. So, if I have problems with my ISP, I always just do this IP address renewal, and there is no need to power-cycle the modem. Maybe your cable modem has a similar feature?

sorry ... I didn't saw the 2nd part of your reply, til now..
I just finish reading my modem user's manual (motorola sb5100 series) and nothing says about a borwser based config ingerface.. in fact, in the troubleshooting section says "to restart the modem: un-plug it, or press the reset button in the rear panel" ..but there's no reset button in my modem, only a "stand-by" btn ( reset != stand-by ..so, guess there's no way but unpluggin the device. Despite of it, gonna make some google about it.
thanks again,
