How to upgrade to -current ? New udev for new kernel !?

Hello.

I have done a "non-full" install of Slackware 10.2. I haven't touched any configuration files. I'm running the 2.6.13 kernel and I've installed the modules + headers from the 2nd CD. As Slackware 11 is approaching release, I'd like to know how does one update his distribution to the -current branch ?

Also, in FreeNode's ##Slackware topic, it is stated that kernel 2.6.15+ needs a new udev. I'm planning to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.16 but I have no idea what I'm supposed to do about the udev. Any links to documentation on this matter would be highly appreciated.

Thank you for your attention !

P.S: I don't want to use Swaret (nor any other "non-official" package manager)

Swaret will work just fine. Every box I build I upgrade to Current with no issues.

I've broken all my slackware installations with slapt-get and swaret. They work afterwards exect for make and gcc.

Yep, you might have to reinstall glibc after a massive update. It takes like 30 seconds.

You can use slackpkg that comes with slack:

Edit /etc/slackpkg/blacklist to exclude certain packages from updating
Edit /etc/slackpkg/slackpkg.conf to use a current mirror

slackpkg update
slackpkg upgrade-all

udev will be updated automatically

Most important thing is that you have blacklisted anything that you have updated/compiled manually. In your case since you are using a new kernel would at least include:

kernel-ide
kernel-modules
kernel-source
kernel-headers

also these which should be in by default:

aaa_elflibs
aaa_base

im using slackpkg, just installed 10.2 but used the 2.6 stuff from cd2. i did not install any of the 2.4 stuff (alsa, kernel, modules, source, headers)

my question is that when i use slackpkg if i do not exclude the kernel it wants to install the 2.4 kernel stuff, how do i get it to upgrade the 2.6 stuff i installed from the cd?

also is the test26.s kernel the same as kernel-generic-2.6.13 on disc 2?

Usually if you install things manually like 2.6 kernel etc. then you will need to blacklist it and keep on installing manually.

The packagess for 2.6 kernel can be downloaded from slackware.com
