I have installed Slackware 8.0 (It`s all I have, but I want to give linux a try), it`s not well configurated, but it`s work. But, so I now that slackware current version is 12.0, I'll be glad if someone teach me how can I upgrade it with the minimum packages (I could download all the ISO CDs, but my Internet connexion is very slow (dial-up), and it will take a plenty of time). Otherwise, I think that is a good way to learn more about installation and slackware programs.
The question (in 3 setps) is:
what packages I need (the minimum, but with some desktop environments such as GNOME or KDE) to upgrade my slack 8.0 to 12?
Personally, I would reinstall. So much has changed between the 2 versions that you would spend more time installing and uninstalling each program that it wouldn't be worth your while.
it would be less painful to do fresh install rather than updating from 8.0 to 12.0
big changes have been made over the development of Slack 8.0 and 12.0
besides, if you have managed to install slack 8.0, then i guess you won't have any major problem installing slack 12.0
I wouldn't even want to do a 10 to 12, Slackware 12 is very very different than previous versions. So much has changed that you are sure to have some issue during the upgrade process.
Besides, every package is going to be replaced anyway (or almost every one), so you might as well just reinstall. If bandwidth is an issue, I would try and order the CDs or get a friend to burn them.
The CD price depends on where you get them from. You could also see if your local LUG will help with downloading and burning the CDs. Really, you don't need the full set - just the first 3 will get you installed and give you a graphical desktop.

Can I find it at "ftp.slackware.com/pub" ?
How I proceed to install and upgrade the packages
Seeing as how you say Slackware 8 isn't configured well, it would probably be better for you to simply install Slackware 12 instead. If you don't want to download the cd isos then ordering them as mentioned might be helpful.
However, is you really want to spend some serious time and effort on this you can upgrade from 8 to a minimum 12. If you are going to attempt this I would read all the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT/UPGRADE.TXT for all versions between 8 and 12. More than likely you should be able to simply jump from 8 to 12 and not have to install anything from in between, but the docs mentioned above should help you determine that and other possible nuances.
To get a minimum working Slackware 12 install (without KDE)...well I am not the person to answer that, but I know there are people in this forum that have determined such minimum lists of packages. If you have no preference between GNOME and KDE then it might be easier to simply install that minimum Slackware and then use something like the install script for DroplineGNOME to get your DE. This might be easier than having to worry about the "extra" packages (ones that aren't in the minimum list) needed for KDE.
As you can probably surmise it would be a significant amount of work to accomplish this upgrade and it might very well be that you would practically replace almost every system file in the whole system just to do it. Because of this, I again recommend that you do a fresh install instead. However, if you do try the upgrade please post your experiences along the way.
