How to uninstall KDE in Slackware Due to Limited Memory?
Unfortunately my Dell Inspiron700m laptop with limited memory(512MB) is unable to handle the current KDE Desktop environment. It run slow/lagging with the Hard Disk LED light keep blinking for long time making him sitting in front the screen doing nothing but just to wait for it till stop blinking.
But when i switch to xfce, it works fine. So I conclude that my this laptop with 512MB memory is not able to hold KDE.
How should I remove KDE in order not to damage the whole Slackware OS(Operating System)? Will pkgtool or removepkg be alright?
Memory with xfce:
Quote:
bash-4.2# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 475 455 20 0 8 152
-/+ buffers/cache: 294 181
Swap: 499 211 288

Memory with KDE:
Quote:
bash-4.2# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 475 468 7 0 18 172
-/+ buffers/cache: 276 199
Swap: 499 79 420

Code:
slackpkg remove kde
Why not just don't use kde? Keep XFCE as your DE. Problem solved.

Lots of applications in KDE run well in XFCE. Do you have limited disk space? The reason I ask is that a full install of Slackware runs very well out of the box. You could just run # xwmconfig and change your default desktop to XFCE. The pkgtool utility will allow you to remove KDE packages.

Yes indeed. That's why it prompt me to remove KDE to have more space. Here is my HD space:
Quote:
bash-4.2# df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda6 27816116 19839100 6540960 76% /
/dev/sda1 19455996 15102872 4353124 78% /winXP
tmpfs 243588 0 243588 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda2 10239996 9631280 608716 95% /DataStore
bash-4.2#
|
But since since most of the KDE applications can run well through xfce, i think I would better just fix my DE to xfce.

You could use pkgtool to remove some KDE applications to free up space. You may find some applications useful.

Yes. Just run the command xwmconfig to switch over to XFCE.

My low-spec testing machine is a battered NEC Powermate with a first-generation PIV processor and 512 MB RAM. My personal blend of KDE 4.10.5 runs fine on this machine. Deactivate file indexing, desktop search and graphical effects. Eventually, choose "KDE Failsafe" in KDM.
Of course, you'll be better off on this machine using Xfce. You can uninstall KDE using this command:
Code:
# slackpkg remove kde kdei
Cheers,
Niki
