how to switch lilo's

Hi,

I have Mandrake installed on my boot hard disk with windows xp. I have a second hard disk that holds my Slackware system. My Mandrake drive was /dev/hda until I installed my second drive (a Maxtor SATA), which caused it to be recognized as /dev/hde. Up until now, I've been booting Slackware using the lilo that Mandrake installed. I want to erase Mandrake but I'm wondering what will happen to lilo. How would I reinstall lilo from Slack? Would I need to?

well, just boot slackware, and login.
become root ( su )
then run " liloconfig " ; choose expert-mode, add Slackware and win.
install in the mbr of the drive that boots and you're ready.

( before you do that, maybe good to make a rescue-floppy
with " mkrescue " ).

thanks for the tip. However, if I do this, will the lilo from mandrake be overwritten? Will that affect my Windows boot sector?

yep....lilo-from-mandrake will be overwriten with the one you install.
if you add Slack. and win. in the " liloconfig", then at boot you'll get the choice btw. win/lin.

the mandrake partitions you can reformat for other use.

actually, i get the following just before I run lilo from slack:

Code:
Warning: Partition 1 on /dev/hda is not marked Active.
Warning: partition type 0x0B on device 0x0301 is a dangerous place for
a boot sector. A DOS/Windows/OS2 system may be rendered unbootable.
The backup copy of this boot sector should be retained.
is it safe to proceed? is there something i'm missing?

well, if you've added win. in the lilo-setup. i think it should work ok.
also, a copy of the bootsector you're going to overwrite will be stored in :

/boot/boot.0300.

hope all works....
