How to stop USB mic loading as card 0

I've got an annoying problem! if I have a USB mic plugged in on boot, it gets assigned to card 0 and my sound card gets assigned to card 1. The result is that I get no way to play sound because everything tries to play through the mic (its just a mic not a headset)

Here's the setup I get:
cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [default ]: USB-Audio - Samson C01U
Samson Technologies Samson C01U at usb-0000:00:1d.3-2, full
1 [Audigy ]: Audigy - SB Audigy 1 [SB0092]
SB Audigy 1 [SB0092] (rev.3, serial:0x531102) at 0xc8e0, irq 18

If the mic is plugged in after boot, all is OK.

Is there any config file which can force the soundcard to always be card 0? I'm on vanilla slack 13.

I'm assuming the Mic is using the snd_usb_audio driver.

If this is the case, try adding

Code:
options snd_usb_audio index=-2
to /etc/modprobe.d/sound
