Previously I was able to ssh to my D-link router with
$ ssh admin@192.168.0.1
and then supply the password. after this I got a router prompt
and could explore the router OS. Here "admin" is the router username
and 192.162.0.1 is the router IP on the LAN
However if I issue the same command with my current Netgear router/modem
I get the response
ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.1 port 22: Connection refused
Is this a router configuration issue to do with port 22 and how do I fix it?
I also am not aware of Netgears natively having that capability.
However, I believe that dd-wrt supports this model and has ssh capability if you are are willing to install it.
Netgear as some docs on activating telnet (needs Windows?), but not ssh. There are some cases of adding ssh to the sock firmware for some models. Best bet is to flash DD-WRT or OpenWRT (most Netgear routers run a customized OpenWRT build). Another option is Gargoyl http://www.gargoyle-router.com/ a customization of OpenWRT.
Edit: my bad. None of the fireware sources support your modem.

i have a netgear n150 dvg1000. i can't ssh to the routers ip's which is 192.168.0.254
if i go to my router status web browser http://192.168.0.254:80, i find in the ADSL Port session the following ip whose port 22 is open
Gateway IP Address 10.41.79.254
the problem is that i don't know username and password. i tried the most obvious things, but couldn't get it.
does anyone know what that is about?
my modem came all locked up, and i can't change any configuration even after resetting to factory settings. And i would like to use its usb port for a harddisk.
I've found that I could go to the router's manufacturer's web site support pages and find the default account/password settings for a router.
Note that on some routers the reset button has to be pushed for a long time (> 30 seconds) to actually have the reset work. This should all be mentioned on the manufacturer's web site.
