How to set up Google Phone to receive incoming calls in Canada - need US proxy?
Hello:
Having a Canadian ISP, I can only make free outgoing long-distant calls (North America) on Google Phone by using my PC. I heard that if I set up a 'US proxy' (I am not sure of the terminology) that I could then get an actual 'Google Phone' *phone number* which would then allow me to get incoming calls on my cell phone. TOR, Freenet & HotSpotShield were also mentioned - but I'm not sure what these things do for you. Does anyone know how to set this stuff up? If so, what applications do I need to install on my Slackware PC to get the Google Phone Number? Does any of this make sense? Thanks, |
Not only do you need a US proxy, but you also need a US phone # to tie the Google # to.....
The US proxy stuff you really only need to do "once"; that is, if Google doesn't detect that you're in the US, then you don't get the option to sign up for a Google Phone #. There are a *trillion* ways to find a US proxy, especially since you only need to use it once. Once you have found the proxy, go into your browser settings (in FF: Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Network>Settings) and input the proxy ip:port. You can also set the proxy from the cli, etc., and various other ways. As for the US phone # that Google Phone requires, there are also a few possibilities. You can purchase devices such as Nettalk, MajicJack (requires a separate Windows box, VM's don't work well, imho), or cheap US cell plan, etc.... cheers, |
I got my Google Voice number.
