how to set default mount codepage for vfat partition as utf8
The default mount codepage for vfat partition seems to be iso-8859-1, which is not OK for non-English languages. Other than recompilation of kernel, could I set the default mount codepage to utf8 somewhere, so that under xfce thunar, I could mount my vfat format usb disk correctly without wrong encoded ???? file names? I know I could set it in /etc/fstab, but it is not generic enough for different usb drives.

Besides changing /etc/fstab you can of course recompile your kernel with that option set (File systems --> DOS/FAT/NT Filesystems --> VFAT support --> Default codepage for FAT).
I could imagine there is some way to do it with a HAL policy. After looking at this bug I think it would not be worth the work: http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2891. You would have to patch and recompile xfce4. Changing one option in your kernel config and recompiling the kernel takes less time. |
