Fortunately, Kabamaru's packages, which you can get at someslack, are still being updated and have a FreeType 2.4.11 package available.

That's a shame. I'm sad to see them go. Thanks for all the work you put into them over the years.

I am wondering now what the contrast would be between your lcdfilter ports and/or Infinality and Freetype's default subpixel rendering (obviously disabled by default). Can anyone comment on the differences between them?

I like Infinality, but for some reason I find myself wanting to keep things extremely simple these days.

Lost FVWM Menu as upgrading fonts.

I'm a newbie to Slackware and was trying to follow Dugan's font update for UTF-8. But when I go through all the steps and then start FVWM I have no menu items or menu titles at all! This doesn't seem to affect Fluxbox or XFCE or TWM on FVWM. Please can someone point me in the right direction to fix this issue that affects FVWM only? Thank you!

Infinality's value is really that it has special handling for individual fonts. It sets, for example, all Microsoft fonts to full hinting and all non-Microsoft fonts to slight hinting. This is consistent with what you would expect. Windows uses full hinting and OS X uses slight hinting.

That's good to know, thanks. I have my system set up now with the Freetype defaults, and I find I do have to change the hinting manually with individual fonts. But I don't mind doing that.

To those of you that use my Infinality packages: I won't be providing them for future Infinality/Slackware releases, cause I recently stopped using Slackware on my main machine (disagreements between the provided DE's and my nvidia). If someone is willing to take over, I'm sure the rest of the Infinality Slackers would be grateful.

:(

That's sad news. (For us).

While I'm sure some people are thinking "Take over, Dugan!", I'd rather wait and see if someone who follows both -current and -stable wants the job. I don't use -current.

thanks for your packages :) good luck!

by the way, hasn't the subpixel hinting patent expired? (probably mixing something here) cause in debian now to achieve good fonts it's sufficient to enable subpixel hinting with fontconfig while in Slackware it doesn't work.

@kabamaru: I really appreciate the work you've put in. I was using Dugan's LCD filter patches, and since they are no longer available I've been enjoying a pretty desktop with smooth infinality fonts. I hope it all gets back to normal after someone take the charge.

Hi everyone, i am in -current and have made some changes to freetype, fontconfig and cairo SlackBuilds to integrate the patches from infinality-bundle (http://ibn.net63.net).

You can find the modified SlackBuilds (with some notes & screenshots) at https://github.com/nihilismus/bob-infinality-bundle

- Cheers

nice! thank you very much. I have been using default configuration with (microsoft subpixel patch) but this seems better. At least I notice that it makes a better use of space :)

hba 10-26-2013 03:58 PM

@grothen: You are welcome! :)

I have been using these patches and so far they have been working well... except for Firefox, when i went to gmail it started to freeze, trying to fix it i uninstalled some firefox-plugins and i have not noticed the problem any more. Anyway, it better if you try infinality-bundle for yourself ;)

hba 11-11-2013 02:19 PM

Well, Slackware 14.1 is already here so i builded a VM for x86 and tested the modified SlackBuilds, so far they just work.

At my repository there's an install.sh script to make more easy the process and updated the screenshots using xfce.

I sure hope something similar will be available.
I would not want to give up my current font configuration which provides clarity that's hard to find elsewhere.
Firefox screenshot attached for reference.
Thanks for your hard work and good luck.
