How to install thunderbird

I am a Slackware newbie. I have been using Slackware since last December. I am not thinking straight at this moment because I rebooted and thunderbird is gone. I will attempt to communicate as efficiently as I can. This is very difficult at this moment.

I'll start with what my system tells me I have:
Code:
root@caitlyn:~# updatedb
root@caitlyn:~# locate bin/thunderbird
Now what I've done to try to fix it:

Code:
root@caitlyn:~# slackpkg search thunderbird

Looking for thunderbird in package list. Please wait... DONE

The list below shows all packages with name matching "thunderbird".

[  upgrade  ] - mozilla-thunderbird-52.1.1-x86_64-1_slack14.2 --> mozilla-thunderbird-45.1.1-x86_64-1

You can search specific files using "slackpkg file-search file".

root@caitlyn:~#
So it SHOULD already be installed, right? But I can't find it. Never mind that, I'll just reinstall it.
Code:
root@caitlyn:~# slackpkg install thunderbird

Looking for thunderbird in package list. Please wait... DONE

No packages match the pattern for install. Try:

	/usr/sbin/slackpkg reinstall|upgrade

root@caitlyn:~#
Why can't I install thunderbird? What am I doing wrong?

can you check your repo configuration first?
also try to run slackpkg update first.

You need the name mozilla-thunderbird when you try to reinstall it with slackpkg.

The package is called 'mozilla-thunderbird', as 'slackpkg search' said, and therefore you would need 'slackpkg install mozilla-thunderbird', or preferably (since it says [ upgrade ]), 'slackpkg upgrade mozilla-thunderbird'

Edit: quick work MikelN

Code:
root@caitlyn:~# slackpkg upgrade mozilla-thunderbird

Checking local integrity... DONE
Looking for mozilla-thunderbird in package list. Please wait... DONE

No packages match the pattern for upgrade. Try:

	/usr/sbin/slackpkg install|reinstall

root@caitlyn:~#
And this was AFTER a slackpkg update command.

To be honest if I had screwed up my system as badly as you have I'd just install from scratch. It's now been quite a while since you screwed up your system (a week? weeks?) yet here you are still trying to fix the resulting problems. You'd have installed and configured Slackware in a couple of hours, saved yourself a lot of grief and saved us from trying to solve problems that are not Slackware-related but rather PEBKAC.

I don't recognize your acronym, "PEBKAC". I didn't want to take the easy way out. That's why I hadn't already done that. But I have done it now. Thank you for your help, those of you who tried to help me. Now I have to go through the several hours of reinstalling packages I actually use and figuring out how to make what doesn't work out-of-the-box to work the way I want it.

There are more important battles to fight. Don't fight the unnecessary ones. in the weeks you've fought these battles you could have learned a bit of shell scripting and vim instead. Good luck with your new system.
