Which kernel do you use ?

If you use a 2.6 kernel then download the Mandrake 10 driver for 2.6.3 and then you will have a sm56-06.blahblah.rpm
Do the following:
1)
Code:
 rpm2tgz sm56-06.blah.rpm
Now you will have a sm56-blah.tgz
2)
Code:
 installpkg sm56-blah.tgz
then you will have the driver in /usr/tmp. Try installing it by running

Code:
insmod sm56.ko
I don't believe it will work but maybe you are lucky.

If you use a 2.4 kernel then you just download the other driver and do the same steps.

The scanmodem utility on this page will advise you as to what modem driver. In slackware it is easiest to compile from source. I wonder if it is a smartlink modem?

Linmodems

If it is your are in luck, there is a good linux driver at the smartlink website.

Unfortunately the scanmodem program indicates this is not a well supported modem in slackware with the 2.6 kernel series.

You have a couple of options:
1) Try the above rmp@tgz conversions and pray.
2) Use the stock 2.4 kernel and use this driver
3) Use an older distro as described on the above page.
4) Get a differrent modem. I have had good luck with modem based on the lucent/agere LTmodem chipset. I have found them new on the internet for around $9.00 US + shipping.
