Ok I dl the slack 9 iso. Installed everything in newb fashion w/ no errors. Startx cmd is not found and init 5 does nadda. Gnome is on the cd but it does't seem to have installed. I have no clue what needs to be installed for X to work. So if somebody knows a thing or two, I would love to pick your brain.. cuz your nose might be to messy. hehehe
Hmm looks like i wasn't the only one with gnome problem. I have kdeinit won't start either. I thought it was something wrong with the iso I burned. Downloading it again.
What display card do you have on your comp?
(Trying to make a connection)
Geforce4 Ti 4600 However during install I never configured X and I'm pretty sure what I need didn't install. Then again if I knew what I was looking for.... and that pesky find cmd...
ok. install dropline gnome; this is a special gnome distribution
for slackware, which is easy to install, automagically satisfies
dependencies and incorporates various enhancements. get
it here.

well gee.. I figured it out in my case. It was right in front of me. And hopefully,to help someone else, let me out line the steps I took, futile and not so futile.
1. From a fresh install of 8.1, I copied the file structure of the 9.0 disk to a local folder (/pub/slackware/Slackware-9.0), and used swaret to update the installed packages with those from the 9.0 distribution I had stored locally.
2. I then did an 'upgradepkg --install-new */*.tgz'
I did this from the
/pub/slackware/Slackware-9.0/slackware
directory, as all the packages are one directory level down in the disk structure.
3. I then rebooted, still no GNOME. I looked back here.. on LinuxQuestions.org, and saw a thread that referred to a package that apparently isnt installed (mind you, the command i ran above should have caught this, but it didn't); the ATK libraries, which you will find in directory /l on the 9.0 disk. There was also a mention of the gtk+-2.2.2 series not being installed.
4. I removed ('removepkg gtk+-2.2xxxxxxx') the gtk+-2.2.2 package, and reinstalled it, along with the atk libraries.
Startx, and viola! there's GNOME, and Gaim as well.

I did xf86config prior to startx, yes.
I installed the NVIDIA Linux Drivers (I have a GeForce 2) , then ran xf86config, set up the X file (couldnt resist) and made the changes for the driver manually to it.
startx and off I went.
I'm STILL having an issue with mpeglib 1.3.1. Cant watch any VCD's. I had to install a different library with different software. It's the last thing I havent been able to get working.
I will try to upgrade the packages. I tried xf86config and xfree86config but the commands are unknown. Slack 9 is the only thing I could get installed on my new computer. So after I try this upgrade pkg i will let ya know.
chances are that every distro you've installed has worked fine but not left you with a working XF86Config. You dont need anything but a text app to get it going. Get all the specs you can find for you're video card and monitor then have a look at /etc/X11/XF86Config. You should be able to find docs on the XF86Config file and while a bit messy looking
it's a fiarly striaght forward thing (as long as you dont have some screwy video card) Good luck or Congtratulations (if you've got it going already)
