Question How to install ATI Radeon HD3870 AGP drivers?

hi guys,

yesterday I did a fresh install of my slackware 13.37.
now I'm having problems with my graphic card. Scrolling isn't smooth, it's laggy and the overall performance makes me sick.

I tried to install radeonhd (http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd) but it didn't really work. I got no errors during the install, after the install I edited my xorg.conf-vesa file but the performance is still the same.

maybe it is using another xorg.conf file which I am missing. How can I find out which configuration is used?

my xorg.conf-vesa --> http://pastebin.com/BVdz1nht

what would you guys suggest?

Editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa isn't enough. You need to copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Having said that, radeonhd is deprecated and unsupported.

You have two choices with that GPU. You can use the open source radeon driver, which should have been used by default, or the proprietary driver from AMD. If you want to use the radeon driver, remove any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, restart X, and show us the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that is generated, and maybe we can see if something is not working properly. If you want to use fglrx, you can download it directly from AMD's site and build slackware packages using the --buildpkg option.

I installed the fglrx drivers from ATI. I used the wiki here http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Sla...ackBuild_(ENG) to get my drivers installed and configured. The link came from the ATI drivers webpage.

There is only one universal fglrx for almost all ATI HD desktop cards. So it doesnt matter if you download from HD 3xxx (PCI-E) or HD 5xxx (PCI-E) - series. That universal fglrx contains support for AGP also (I use fglrx myself for my HD4670 AGP). However, the performance of that driver can be discussed...

I have two pc's and both are mobility radeon setups. But, like eXpander said, use the one for your model and do not worry about agp vs pci-e. I folowed the directions on that wiki and it went smooth as can be.
