How to Input Japanese character?

Hi,

I was hoping to use Slackware 12.1 as my main system to replace Windows system that I'm currently using. So far, I'm very happy with Slackware, but I can't seem to configure it so that I can type Japanese characters.

Here is what I have done so far:

1) Installed "kde-i18n-ja-3.5.9-noarch-1.tgz" from the 3rd CD
2) Downloaded and installed following packages from source in this order:
scim-1.4.7
anthy-9100e
scim-anthy-1.2.6
skim-1.4.5
3) Changed the LANG=en_US environment to LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in ~/.bash_profile
4) Created ~/.i18 and typed following values:
GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
QT_IM_MODULE=xim
XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"
XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
5) Started KDE with startx
6) I can see the skim icon in the system tray and configured it by following the steps in this url (http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~apricots/s.../howto.html#sk)

After all of this, Ctrl+space does not bring up the language tool - nothing happens. Am I missing steps? Does anyone out there have tried and worked?

Please point me to any other tutorials or documentations to get this working. It is very important for me to be able to type Japanese...

I appreciate any of your comments.

Thanks in advance,
ubyt3m3

Hello,

SCIM packages are available in Slackware 12.1 except SKIM but you do not really need it to make input in Japanese.

Please remove the packages you have compiled from source and install those provided in slackware (in x/ section).

Then to ensure proper set-up of SCIM, follow the steps described in file CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT available in the first CD.

Please read the section in CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT about setting up SCIM !
Input of Japanese characters works out of the box in Slackware after following the guidelines found in the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file. There is no need to download additional packages.
Japanese input (as well as printing Japanese text) was tested a lot during development of Slackware 12.1.

Thanks for your posts, guys!
I'll check out the file and follow its steps. See if I can get it working. If it works, that'll be sweet. I'll say good-bye to MS Windows.

Yey! it worked.

I remember reading about the steps while I was researching it for Slackware 12 last week and I couldn't find /etc/profile.d/scim* so I decided to build from the source.

Slackware 12.1 is much better improved in this regard, I must say.

thanks!
