The "|" character is called a "pipe". It's used to direct the output of one program into another program as it's input.
The command will output system startup messages from "dmesg" and run it through the "more" program which breaks up lines of text into screenfull chunks.

Perhaps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AltGr_key will tell you how to access the pipe symbol on a UK keyboard (I don't own one myself so I can not testify it is correct).

Its' the key immediately to the left of the 'Z' key, with the 'shift' pressed.

Thanks. Found it, but not on the key that displays it, if that makes sense.
How to change keyboard and regional layout with Fluxbox, I changed it in kde but fluxbox reverted back to us.

Hey man, I see you're from Scunthorpe. Although i live in Boston now (US), I'm originally from Grimsby and would just like to to point out to everyone that although the placename "Scunthorpe" may contain a certain vulgarity of sorts, the place itself is as far from vulgarity as anywhere else I can think of and is well worth visiting.
Cheers Capt. Chaos and welcome to Slackware

Change it inside /etc/x11/xorg.conf.
My keyboard section with a spanish layout is this one (you should fine one similar in your file):
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "es"
EndSection
You've to change XkbLayout option
